المستخلص: This study attempts to identify the students’ self-esteem and its relationship to their learning motivation and gender differences at the Department of Social Sciences, University of Tiaret in Algeria. The research sample consists of 240 first and third year Social Sciences students- males and females- during the year 2020- 2021. In order to collect data, two different tools were used; self-esteem scale and learning motivation scale. The data were analysed by using both the correlation coefficient, and two-way analysis of variance test (ANOVA test). This study has shown that the students have a self-esteem level which is higher than the average. Besides, a positive correlation coefficient was found between students’ self-esteem and their learning motivation. Moreover, according to the analysis of variance, there are statistical differences in self-esteem between the students at the level (α ≤ 0.05) in favor of females. Whereas, statistical differences were found at the level (α ≤ 0.05) between the two academic levels in favor of first-year students. Thus, based on these results, it is recommended to conduct more studies to understand the nature of the relationship between self-esteem and motivation to learn.
