هذه دراسة نصية لأسلوب مسرحية "المتعهد" لديفيد ستوري شكلا ومضموناً وبينت الدراسة قدرة الكاف علي إظهار الطبقية، والصراعات الداخلية والميول العاطفية لشخصيات المسرحية من خلال عرض مسرحي يخلو من التعقيد يقوم على نصب خيمة زفاف وتفكيكها . كما تعالج الدراسة الموضوعات الرئيسية المعروضة في المسرحية والأساليب الدرامية التي يستخدمها الكاتب لإيصال هذه الموضوعات. وتقع المسرحية في ثلاثة فصول، تدور أحداث الفصلين الأول والثاني حول قيام العمال بنصب خيمة زفاف ل ( كلير) ابنة المتعهد ( ايوبانك ) فيما خصص الفصل الثالث لتفكيك الخيمة. ومما يلفت النظر في المسرحية أن الحدث الرئيسي وهو حفل الزفاف تم خارج خشبة المسرح، دلالة على فقدان مثل هذه الطقوس إلى أهميتها في الحياة اليومية.
This paper is a detailed study of the form and content of David Storeys play The Contractor. It points out how Storey explores the inner hostilities, love, class distinction and conflicts of his characters through a simple dramatic situation represented by workers raising, decorating and eventually pulling down a tent for a wedding party. The study not only points out the major themes and subject matter explored by David Storey in the play but also shows the dramatic methods and theatrical devices used to communicate them. David Storey divides The Contractor into three continuous acts. The first two acts are dedicated to building the tent which is to serve as the pavilion for the wedding reception of Clair, the daughter of Ewbank, the contractor. In the third act, the workers dismantle the tent. The main event of the play, the wedding is presented off stage; an indication to the decay of rituals in everyday life.
