520 |b Where English is an EFL, it is a kind of a hindering task to teach English literature. The case applies to Iraqi University level of the students where courses of English Literature are a kind of a hectic burden in some cases. The current study discusses the problems and challenges teachers face in teaching literary courses at university level. To highlight this issue the study targets teachers and learners in the departments of English in Iraqi Universities. The data is collected through a questionnaire to teachers and learners to examine how teachers face these problems and how they can address them; on the other hand, learners will be also targeted to find out how they perceive English literary courses at university specialized departments where English is contextualized through literature. According to, the study is a two-sided presentation for both teachers and learners. Language competence issues are usually an important challenge where the proficiency of the teacher and the learner of English are of high significance; hence, the case of teachers and learners of English literature in particular in Iraq is not given a high value where it sometimes does not comply with students’ abilities to take up complex descriptive language of literature that revolves around the issues of proficiency. All these issues related to the problems and challenges that teachers face in teaching literature courses will be examined briefly in this paper with reference to Iraqi University-level students.
