المستخلص: Many English academic style guides have introduced bias-free language guidelines enjoining the use of an inclusive tone of speaking when referring to people and openly stating their identity, including ‘gender’ identity. This paper attempts to investigate how such specific guidelines are recontextualized and mediated through teacher adaptations and summaries to bring them into conformity with the target culture norms. To broach this rather intricate topic, we have chosen a summary of the 5th edition of the translation of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. A number of passages are selected to detect and interpret the motivations behind any gatekeeping operations on the part of the teacher. It is found that the teacher seems to have problematized those specific recommendations; while they were not deleted altogether, they were de-emphasised through generalization, under-definition and under-exemplification. In contrast, the other non-contentious recommendations were sufficiently elaborated.
