|b This study examines the utilization of the mother tongue by students and teachers in the context of English language classes. Several aspects are explored, including the students' perspective on mother tongue use, the teachers' viewpoint on mother tongue use, strategies of promoting the use of the target language, and the implications of these practices for teaching methodology. The influence of linguistic similarities between the target language and the mother tongue is discussed, highlighting its potential benefits and drawbacks, as well as its tendency to facilitate accurate guesses by learners. The primary focus of this paper is to present methods that promote a balanced approach to incorporating the mother tongue in English classes, specifically among first semester students enrolled in the Faculty of Art at Tripoli University. Ultimately, the conclusion emphasizes the need for a flexible perspective regarding the use of the mother tongue by both students' and teachers' beneficial ways.
