This study aimed at identifying the effectiveness of using portfolios in developing teaching skills and attitudes towards the profession of commerce and economics students enrolled in the Educational Diploma at the College of Education, Sultan Qaboos University. A sample was selected from those students and divided into two groups, an experimental group using portfolios and a control one whose members did not use portfolios. Two instruments were designed for the purpose of this study: an observation scheme for measuring the three teaching skills: planning, implementation and evaluation, and an attitudes scale.. The two instruments were administered at the end of the treatment to members of both groups to find out whether there is a statistically significant difference between the means of the two groups. Findings reveal the effectiveness of using portfolios in developing both teaching skills and favorable attitudes towards the teaching profession. One of the recommendations of this study is the need to use portfolios as a means of evaluating student teachers which develops both teaching skills and positive attitudes towards the teaching profession. Another recommendation is to develop the Methods of Teaching Course to incorporate the use of portfolios and to train them in how to design portfolios.
