المستخلص: This paper examines the status and translation strategies of English multi-word units (henceforth MWU’s) in English-Arabic lexicography and is divided into three sections. The first determines the extent of coverage one hundred English multi-word units have received in three general-use English-Arabic dictionaries. The second tackles the first of the fifty English multi-word units, all of which are loan translations (or caiques), in order to assess their acceptability and use as equivalents in the dictionary. The last section investigates the remaining fifty English multi-word units which have potential equivalent Arabic multi-word units and how often Arab lexicographers resort to this cross-cultural type of equivalence in their work. The findings demonstrate that the number of English multi-word units cited in the three dictionaries fails to reflect the central role such units occupy in English lexis and lexicography; that Arab lexicographers apparently disagree on which caiques merit listing as equivalents, and, finally, that equivalent Arabic multi-word units are underused as a translation strategy amongst lexicographers.
