Arabic machine translation is bound to face many problems in producing meaningful coherent output. This is primarily because Arabic language is a distant language from the source language or target language counterpart which often has a different system of usage. This paper investigates the linguistic challenges that machine translation (MT) from and into Arabic faces. It discusses and analyzes translation problems while providing a diagnosis of the faults, and also endeavors to shed light on the areas where the MT system performance fails to provide the right translation. Also discussed are problematic areas of lexis and grammar as well as issues related to lexicon, terminology, and collocation. Meanwhile, one source problem which is the wrong analysis of input that can be related to both areas of lexis and grammar is also touched upon in this paper. The paper raises questions and provides recommendations to help in the improvement of MT systems.
