المستخلص: Speakers often avoid certain words that may not be accepted by the language community. This avoidance is an essential part of their sociolinguistic competence which is referred to, in sociolinguistics, as Euphemism. Sociolinguistic competence, then, includes avoidance of taboo and following the rules of society in dealing with euphemisms. Sociolinguistic competence may be defined, then, as the ability to interpret the social meaning of the choice of linguistic varieties and to use language with the appropriate social meaning for the communication situation. Language use of euphemism is an inseparable part of sociolinguistic competence. A language without euphemisms would be a defective instrument of communication. This study is concerned with language use, especially attitudes of students of Arabic as a foreign language in Riyadh towards euphemism. The current study endeavours to examine learner’s awareness and use of euphemism as potentially related to students’ achievement in related skill (writing) as well as to their previous overall grades In keeping with these objectives, Two main questions guided this study: 1. Are students aware of euphemism ? 2. Do students use euphemism as part of their sociolinguistic competence?
