|a This study aims at evaluating EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) in terms of its behavioural objectives. The aim of this study can be achieved through answering the following questions : 1- What are the behavioural objectives according to which EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) is designed? 2- To what extend the given instructional tasks, exercises, and topics of EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) are capable to achieve the identified behavioural objectives? 3- How is the performance of TIPs (boys & girls) in the following : - written & oral tests ? - written test ? - oral test ? 4- Are there significant differences between the performance of boys and girls in the following : - written &oral tests ? - written test ? - oral test ? 5- How do EFL teachers evaluate materials of Student's Book concerning their; sufficiency, difficulty, authenticity, integration and appropriacy? 6- How do EFL teachers evaluate the exercises of Activity Book and the instructions of Teacher's Book? 7- How do EFL teachers EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) in terms of its behavioural objectives? 8- What are the obstacles that face the teachers in teaching EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) ? The present study is limited to EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) which is taught to TIPs in some intermediate schools in the city of Kirkuk for the academic year 2009 – 2010. In order to achieve the aim of the study and answer the stated questions, two diagnostic tests for TIPs and a questionnaire for the teachers of English who actually teach those pupils, have been constructed, validated and applied to the selected sample of the pupils and teachers.
|a A sample of 296 pupils, (101 boys and 195 girls) who represtnts 52% of the original population is selected. Also a sample of thirteen teachers who teach English in the selected schools is involved. The sample of the selected teachers represents 54% of the original population. The obtained results show that : 1- The instructional tasks, exercises, topics of EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) don’t achieve their identified behavioural objectives. 2- The performance of TIPs (boys & girls) in the (written & oral), written and oral tests is found to be below the average level. 3- There are significant differences at 0.05 level between the performance of boys and that of girls in the (written & oral), written and oral tests on the behalf of girls. 4- Student's Book supplies pupils with sufficient practice on different language areas, and it gives pupils enough opportunities for practising all language skills. 5- “Grammar” is the most difficult language area, and “function” is the easiest area. 6- The materials of the Student’s Book are well integrated. They provide authentic pieces of information, knowledge about the culture of the English speaking society. They are arranged according to the order of difficulty. 7- vocabulary terms are repeated in consequent lessons to reinforce their meaning and use, and the pictures and colours available in the Student's Book, are useful and suitable for the given textbook exercises. 8- Activity Book supplies pupils with enough practice in the different skills of English. Activities and exercises included within Activity Book reinforce those that have been studied within Student's Book, these activities which are given within the Activity Book, are enough to enhance pupils’ learning. 9- The instructions included within the Teacher’s Book are clear and easy to be applied in teaching. Teacher’s Book includes answers for all the exercises included in the Activity Book, 10- EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) supplies the pupils with sufficient opportunities to use English language communicatively, it allows both group work and individual work. 11- EFL teachers are satisfied that the objectives of EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) are easy and attainable and there is no mistake in FEL Sunrise Course (Book 9). 12- EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) is appropriate for the third intermediate pupils’ levels, EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) is better than the previous course (The New English Course For Iraq, Book 5). They add that there is no enough time to teach materials of EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) communicatively. 13- The obstacles and problems which the teachers face in teaching EFL Sunrise Course (Book 9) are : shortage of time, smallness of classroom, crowded classes, lack of electricity, audio CDs, CD player, and language laboratory. Finally, on the basis of the results outlined earlier, a number of recommendations and suggestions have been given.
