المستخلص: Since studying the needs of a learner in the learning context is the focus of education (Williams & Burden, 1997), the resercher conducted a survey to study the attitudes of 247 male and female university students in Saudi Arabia towards learning English. Encouraging and applying this concept shows a real desire of researchers and practitioners to have the learner as a major part in planning. It also means the awareness of expanding the role of EFL/ESL as a vehicle of learning (Artamonova, 2002). The results show that university students are highly motivated and have favorable attitudes towards learning English which reflects the importance of these two variables. It is also found that there is a significant correlation between attitudes and motivations of students of different gender and academic background towards English learning. However, there is a need for a more positive environment where the learners can be motivated to have more favorable attitudes towards acquiring the foreign language successfully. Finally, this study claims to provide some insights about the English language teaching situation in Saudi Arabia. It hopes to encourage researchers, educationists and teachers to put more effort in exploring more issues related to teaching English to non-English majors in Saudi Arabia.
