|b This paper investigates the possibility of absolute equivalence of target language (T.L.) texts to source language (S.L.) texts with regard to translation. Catford's relevant statements are discussed and proved inadequate. It is neither objective nor reliable to use bilingual informants in verifying equivalence as suggested by Catford. The concept of equivalence seems to be a delusion.
The idea of transference of meaning from one language to another is also discussed. The definition of meaning adopted by Catford for this purpose is investigated and criticized. Instead, it is emphasized that language is an integral part of culture and that in translation, transference of meaning includes transference of elements of culture that contribute to meaning. The importance of culture in translation problems is
considered and briefly analysed.
