المستخلص: The study aimed at investigating the problems that fourth year university students of English at the Faculty of Education in Al-Mergeb University have encountered in the field of academic writing. The actual area of difficulty in academic writing discussed in this study is the use of more academic vocabulary in the students’ writing. Thus, the subjects of the study were asked to use key vocabulary, instead of less academic words written in bold to make the sentences a more formal academic style. Research findings revealed that words; such as, looked at, builds up, went against and thought up were very difficult for the subjects to answer. For example, the percentage of difficulty varied from 80% to 70%. The students failed to replace these words with a more academic vocabulary. However, words as lies in, stands for, showed and faced were less problematic for the students to answer. These errors were attributed to the students' lack of exposure as well as to the faulty teaching language methodology. \
