We will present in this study three Commissions (bodies) on the promotion and protection of human rights in the member States of the League of Arab States ( ). The Charter of this League was signed on the 22nd of March 1945 ( ). The promotion and protection of human rights was not originally among the issues that were stated in the Charter of the League of Arab States ( ). The interest in this issue by the League of Arab States started seriously only in the sixties of the last century, more specifically in 1968 when the Council of the League issued its decision on the establishment of the Arab Permanent Commission on Human Rights. The Council, four decades after its inception, established the Human Rights Experts Committee in 2006 with the aim that these experts would help the Arab Permanent Commission on Human Rights in its work and activities. The big leap in the protection of human rights in the member states of the League of Arab States, however, took place when the members of the Arab Human Rights Experts Committee were elected, as a result of the adoption of the Arab Charter on Human Rights by the Arab Summit in Tunisia on the 23rd of May 2004 ( ). The Arab Charter on Human Rights entered into force on the 16th of March 2008 ( ).
