التختم عادة إنسانية قديمة؛ فقد مال الإنسان إلى لبس الخواتم بأنواعها منذ زمن بعيد، واتخذها لأغراض الزينة، ثم استعملها لغايات سياسية ودينية، وأضحى الخاتم رمز الملك وعلامة الأبهة والسلطان. ولجأ الإنسان في طور لاحق إلى تحلية خواتمه بالكتابة على فصوصها، فجاءت تلك النقوش معبرة عن شخصيات حامليها، ملخصة رؤاهم في الحياة. واستعمل المسلمون الخواتم للأغراض نفسها التي عرفتها الأمم السابقة، وتضاعف الإقبال على اتخاذ الخاتم لأغراض رسمية-وغير رسمية – اقتداء بالرسول -صلى الله عليه وسلم-الذي سن اتخاذ الخاتم والنقش عليه. واتخذ خلفاء الإسلام خواتم رسمية وشخصية نقشوا عليها ما يحلو لهم من العبارات التي تعبر عن صفوة أفكارهم ورؤاهم، وتابع الخلفاء العباسيون هذا السنن السلطاني، فكانت عنايتهم بالخواتم ونقوشها لا تقل عن عناية متقدميهم من الخلفاء. وقد شكلت النقوش العباسية التي حملتها خواتم خلفائهم مادة مهمة تفرغت هذه الدراسة لتناول ملامحها ومضامينها وأساليبها ومصادرها وعناية المعاصرين بها، كما عنيت دراستنا من بعد بجمع ما تسنى جمعه من نقوش خواتم الخلفاء في هذا العصر وتقديمها بالقدر الذي تأذن به الروح العلمية
Wearing rings is an ancient human custom. Since ancient times, man has inclined toward wearing different types of rings for different reasons, including ornamentation and for political and religious goals. Hence, the ring became a token of sovereignty, a sign of grandeur, and power. In later stages man adorned the gems of rings with inscriptions that express the personalities of their holders and their lives' visions. Muslims used rings for the same purposes as earlier previous nations. They wore rings for official - and non - official purposes in emulation of the Prophet Mohammed (Peace be upon him), who institutionalized the wearing of inscribed rings. Caliphs in Islam used official and personal rings, on which they inscribed, phrases that summarized their ideas and visions. Abbasid Caliphs continued this custom, and their care for rings and their inscriptions were no less than that of their predecessors. Inscriptions on the rings of the Abbasid Caliphs present an important topic of study. This research deals with these inscriptions' features, contents, styles and sources and contemporary researchers, interest in this custom. As such, the researcher has collected inscriptions of Caliphs rings from this era and analyzed them in the most scientific manner possible
