Using an Enrichment Reading - Based Program with Linguistically Gifted Students and Its Effects on Developing Their Language Proficiency and Analytical Thinking Skills

The present study investigated the effects of using an enrichment reading-based program on developing English language proficiency and analytical thinking skills of linguistically gifted students. Forty eight linguistically gifted first year secondary school students were randomly selected from a larger population enrolled in Alkharja secondary school in the New-Valley. The subjects were divided into two groups: an experimental group that received an intensive training on the enrichment reading-based program and a control group. The latter group received the regular classroom instruction. Tools of the study included an enrichment program in reading, an English language proficiency exam and an analytical thinking skills test. Results of the study indicated that there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores obtained by subjects of the experimental group in the pre/post test of language proficiency (favoring the post performance). Also, there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores obtained by subjects of the experimental group in the pre/post test of analytical thinking skills favoring the post performance. It was also found that there were significant correlations between students' English Language proficiency skills and their analytical thinking skills. |
