Reading is one of the most important skills to acquire knowledge in each discipline. In the information explosion times, good English reading ability is indispensable. The purpose of the current study is to provide a picture of the Cognitive reading strategies employed by a group of Saudi English majors when involved with the task of reading academic materials (textbooks, journal articles, class handouts, etc.) in English. In addition, this study attempts to explore the relationship between cognitive reading strategy use and reading ability reflected in students' reading test results. Participants were 65 students in the first year of their studies, which completed the Reading strategy questionnaire, which aims to reveal the frequency of Reading strategies respondents report using when reading texts in English. The results of questionnaire analysis revealed that out of the thirty- nine strategies included in the questionnaire, the students only used 23 strategies positively. 16 strategies fall in the low usage category. Some examples of these strategies that are not used effectively by Saudi students were analyzing the grammatical structure of a complicated sentence in order to understand it, scanning, skimming the text to get the idea quickly, taking notes, making predictions, and classifying words according to their meanings
