|b This is a study of the charitable Direct Aid Society and its role in promoting higher education. It was established in 1981 in Kuwait and involved in humanitarian projects including education, Da’wah and charity. It uses modern methods in its operation and helps poor and needy people of Africa. Since its inception it has established 200 secondary and primary schools plus many Qur’anic schools. This study highlights the role of this organization in uplifting higher education which has had a significant implication on African societies, especially as education in these societies have been controlled by the Churches for a long time. The organization established the following three universities: Ummah in Kenya, Sumait in Zanzibar, and Simid in Somalia. This study is focused on the two cases of Sumait and Ummah universities. The objectives of these universities are the following: establishing Islamic educational platform to solve cultural problems in the region; providing societies with efficient leaders and cadres, and producing academicians and legal Judges of high knowledge. More than 3000 students have graduated from these universities between 1999 and 2013. While more than 145 are currently enrolled in postgraduate programmes, 40,000 are enrolled in undergraduate programmes
