Praise be to God alone and may His peace and blessings be upon the Prophet after who there is no other Writing about mukhtalaf [conflicting] and mushkil [those traditions whose meanings are not easily understood] traditions is problematic though of utmost importance especially at present amid the campaign of doubt against the Prophetic Sunnah, claims of conflicting narratives, sarcasm, and rejecting it in its entirety. Taking on from where we have left off in the previous issue, this paper discusses the means by which hadiths scholars and Islamic legal theorists deal with mukhtalaf and mushkil traditions. These include: refuting mansukh hadith [abrogated hadith], tarjih [preponderance] and tawaqquf [suspension of judgment]. This study comprises one chapter entitled “Some means by which hadiths scholars and Islamic legal theorists deal with mukhtalaf and mushkil traditions”. This chapter consists of three topics: 1- Refuting abrogated hadith. 2- Tarjih. 3- Tawaqquf. From the above, it is concluded that: - The study of this discipline and the joint efforts of hadith and Islamic legal theorists generate a solid defense of the blessed Sunnah. - It shows that the fragmentation that has occurred between the Sunnah and its sciences and between Islamic legal theory was at the expense of the Sunnah itself and Islamic law. - That understanding the Prophetic Sunnah by means of Islamic legal theory and ilm mustalah al-hadith (the principles and rules governing the text and ascription of traditions with regard to their acceptance and rejection): a- Refutes false misconceptions claiming the existence of discrepancies between Prophetic traditions or between Prophetic traditions and the Holy Quran. b- Exonerates the transmitters of the Sunnah from negligence, delusion, forgetfulness, and misunderstanding the traditions. c- Demonstrates the methodology of the Sunnis in understanding Prophetic traditions classified under mukhtalaf and mushkil and the manner of dealing with them. d- Demonstrates that the methodology of Sunnis in understanding Prophetic traditions is one which agrees with reason and logic without affectation or misinterpretation. e- Allows specialists of Islamic sciences to acquire the aptitude to reconcile between traditions which appear to be conflicting. f- Defends the Prophetic Sunnah against claims of discrepancies. And may the peace and blessings be upon our master Muhammad and upon his family and praise be to God, Lord of the worlds
