This article has attempted a revealing discussion of two concepts of secularism: absolute and partial secularism introduced by the late Dr. Abd al-Wahhab al-Messiri in several of his treatises and books through an exhaustive discourse analysis. The article further critiques some of the features and traits of these concepts as discussed in the philosophical and intellectual stances of this thinker and his opinion thereof. In his discussion, Dr. al-Messiri addressed the concept of secularism, the problematics of the definition, and the developmental phases of this concept. He gave many of the definitions set forth for the term as provided by its original creators and in cultures alien to it, but he failed to provide a comprehensive definition. Therefore, he felt complacent to subsume these definitions under the category of partial secularism, all amounting to be features and aspects of absolute secularism, the later simply referring to the model that separates religion from state. The present study has also explained some aspects of Dr. al-Messiri's reconceptualisation of absolute secularism, and his definitions of the term; according to him, it means to separate all values, morals, ethics and religion from man’s life, general and private lives. This operational definition of comprehensive secularism is deeply rooted in the practical aspects of the term, not the lexical nor the abstract denotations. He has outlined the traits of the concept, its referents, and its denial of all that is absolute or sacred. In this vein, he explained related terms that may mix with this concept such as normalisation and objectification, further explicating the empirical interrelations between these intermingling terms. Further on, he rightfully critiqued absolute secularism as a whole both in theory and in practice, stating the negative consequences of practicing this dogma of absolute secularism. The thinker then moved to the critical aspects of absolute secularism practices, categorising the practitioners according to their motives and the consequences of their absolute secularist practices, and according to his own criteria that he developed for this critical purpose. Nevertheless, the study concluded that Dr. al-Messiri has over-emphasised his definitional concept of absolute secularism, yet his stance towards partial secularism reveals a concurring attitude commensurate with prior literature. This in fact is a big fallacy as his intellectual stance towards partial secularism is wrapped in ambiguity and is, therefore, too vague, to explicate why he concurred with prior definitions. It would have been apposite and fair had he expounded his definition in more elucidating details that clarify his stance and the facts why he adopted it. Finally, it would have been apposite to appraise his theory in the light of Islamic Sharia, so the present author believes. The present study sought to explicate the principal causes of Dr. al-Messiri’s fallacious stances. The article ends on discussion notes of some intellectuals’ belief that Dr. al-Messiri was a secularist.
