520 |a This essay has been prepared to study the satisfaction level of international students on the quality of teaching that they receive from universities in Australia. The participants of the survey consisted of 61 students from the University of Canberra’s Faculty of Business and Government. They consisted of 21 master’s program students, 11 students pursuing bachelor’s degree courses and also 8 diploma students. Another 21 students who had also participated in the survey did not indicate their type of study program. The survey questionnaire used consisted of 15 questions based on the SERVQUAL model consisting of intangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy. Answers provided were based on a 5 point likert scale used for assessing the satisfaction level of the students. Data from the completed survey were tabulated and analyzed. The results showed that the international students were generally satisfied with the quality of teaching that they were receiving at University of Canberra’s Faculty of Business and Government. The average score for all the international students was a 2.16 where 2.0 represents “agree” and 3.0 represents “neutral”. The survey also found that the students were most satisfied with the presentation during teaching which had an average score of 1.85. They were relatively least satisfied with the suitability of the recommended reference books which had an average score of 2.39. The students pursuing a bachelor’s degree course were the most satisfied with an average score of 2.27 and the diploma students were relatively least satisfied with an average score of 2.32. This outcome was similar to the findings of the National Survey of International Students Studying in Australia which showed that 86% of international students pursuing higher education in Australia were satisfied with the education that they were receiving.
520 |a However, since the study was limited to only 61 students from University of Canberra’s Faculty of Business and Government, it cannot be used to reflect the student opinion of the entire international student population at theUniversity of Canberra’s Faculty of Business and Government. Improvements to the survey can also be made by including other demographics like the student’s nationality, gender and year of study. Other aspects which can influence a student’s learning performance and perception of teaching quality like the social and cultural adjustments required of international students can also be included. This type of similar survey should be repeated annually in other faculties and campuses in Australia in order to collect more accurate feedback on the satisfaction of teaching among the international students. The results from the survey can be used as new inputs for further improvements in the quality of teaching in Australian universities. By successfully implementing such improvements, Australia will be able to attract more international students who will come to stay and study. This will help the education sector to make more contributions to the Australian economy.
