تناولت الدراسة تعريف الاختيار والترجيع، ورأي العلماء فيهما، وبينت الفرق بين الاختيار والترجيع، كما بينت منهج الإمام الشوكاني في اختيار القراءات، وقد كان اختيار الشوكاني للقراءات في تفسيره قليلا، وقد أكثر الشوكاني من ذكر اختيار العلماء والمفسرين للقراءات، كما بينت الدراسة منهج الشوكاني في ترجيح القراءات، فقد قام بالترجح بين القراءات، كما ذكر الشوكاني ترجيح العلماء للقراءات ولكنه كان يذكر ترجيحهم بدون إبداء الرأي، وكان من الواجب عليه الدفاع عن القراءات المتواترة؛ لأنه لا يجوز المفاضلة بين القراءات المتواترة، كما بينت الدراسة منهج الشوكاني في الحكم على القراءات، فقد رجح الشوكاني القراءة المتواترة، وضعف القراءة الشاذة، إلا أنه فاضل أحيانا بين القراءات المتواترة، ولم يكتف الشوكاني بذكر حكمه على بعض القراءات، بل ذكر حكم العلماء على كثير منها، ومما يؤخذ على الشوكاني أنه قلما يدافع عن القراءات المتواترة عند الطعن فيها، أو تضعيفها.
The study explored the definition of selection and preferencing and the judgment of scholars in regard to both concepts, and it sought to illustrate the difference between selection and preferencing. It also shed light on the approach used by Imam Al Shoukani for selecting the narrative. The selection of narrative in Al Shoukani's interpretation was rarely mentioned, however Al Shoukani had repeatedly mentioned the selection of narratives by scholars and interpreters. The study also elaborated the approach used by Al Shoukani in considering preferencing in regard to narratives, so he considered preferencing in regard to narartives. Al Shoukani made mention of preferencing among narratives from the viewpoint of the scholars though he only cited the context of preferencing without stating the views. He should have defended continuously recurrent narratives because it would not be acceptable to make a comparison between the continuously recurrent narratives. The study pointed out the approach used by Al Shoukani in making judgments about the narratives. Al Shoukani considered the continuously recurrent narrative as a preferred one and contended that the non-recurrent narrative was inconsistent. Not only did Al Shoukani make mention of his judgment in regard to some narratives but also mentioned the judgment of scholars in regard to many narratives. Al Shoukani has also been criticized for failing to defend the continuously recurrent narratives whenever they were challenged or weakened.
