“In A universe that is suddenly deprived of illusions and of light, man feels like a stranger”* Life has no meaning. This is the main sentence symbolizing Absurd theatre and literary works related to this period. The Theatre of Absurd is broadly based on ancient standards of the western tradition and has its exponents in Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Eastern Europe and the United States as well as in France. Such a Theatre presents anxiety and despair, a sense of loss at the disappearance of solutions, illusions and purposefulness. Facing up to this loss means that we face up to reality itself; thus Absurd drama becomes a kind of modern mystical experience. These features of Absurd drama were best displayed in most of Beckett’s plays, especially in Waiting for Godot, which is considered his masterpiece. Therefore, this paper will tackle the Theatre of the Absurd and its features, Samuel Beckett as its figure, and Waiting for Godot as play representing the Absurd Theatre.
