تقوم الحضارات منذ القديم على أسس أربع: المنظومة المعرفية، المنظومة القانونية، المنظومة الاقتصادية، والمنظومة الروحية. هذه المنظومات الاربع اساسها الاول هو المنظومة المعرفية، حيث ان صناعة الانسان المؤسس للحضارة يقوم على العلم والاخلاق، وانتشار العلوم والمعارف متواكب مع ثقافة المطالعة للكتب الورقية والالكترونية. هذه المطالعة تصنعها البيئة الاجتماعية الحاضنة، فهي اللحظة التاريخية القصوى للنشاط الحضاري للمجتمع. نجد رواجا كبيرا للكتب تأليفا ونشرا وطباعة وقراءة وبيعا وشراء. وفي اللحظة الفاجعة التي يصاب فيها المجتمع بالسكتة المعرفية يصبح العلم عارا على صاحبه بل يصبح اهل العلم موضع تندر وتهكم من طرف المجتمع وهذا ما نلاحظه في كل المجتمعات المتخلفة، حيث يعم الهزل الاجتماعي في كل مناحي الحياة، إن مصير الجماعة مرتبط دوما بالعلم والقراءة ولهذا نجد تمثالا في فنلندا يمثل انسان يغرق في بحيرة وهو يطالع كتاب وكتب فوقه "إقرأ حتى وان كنت تغرق" يعبر على أن القراءة سر تقدم الامم ورقي الشعوب، وهذا كله مرتبط بالتقدم والتخلق الحضاري للمجتمع.
