A Strategy based on Literature Circles Group Discussions and Cooperative Learning to Develop Some English Reading Comprehension Skills of Preparatory Stage Students

المستخلص: The current study aimed at developing the reading comprehension skills through the use of the literature circles group discussion and cooperative learning strategy for Second year Preparatory Stage, King Fahd Experimental School. The study adopted a quasi-experimental pre-posttest control - experimental group. The total of the two groups were (40) students, control group included (20) students that received the regular study, whereas the experimental group included (20) students who received the suggested strategy. The following tools were used to measure the effectiveness of the strategy; the reading comprehension skills list, and the reading comprehension pre-posttest. Results showed that there were significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental and control groups on the post-test reading comprehension skills test in favor of those of the experimental group which improved at 0.01 level. Results of the teaching strategy proved to be effective in developing the reading comprehension skills in the following sub-skills; identify the main ideas and the supporting details, Determine the synonyms, antonyms, clarify the relation between the characters, Identify the mood of the passage, Predict the following events, Identify the morals, ethics learnt, mention main or key places and events, and evaluate desirability , acceptability of characters, events, situation and Compare and contrast similarities and differences in events, people, and ideas.
