المستخلص: Regardless of its various classifications, Hadith remains the second tier of the primary sources of Shari’a; or, as rightly said, works side-by-side with the Qur’an. As jurists call it al-waÌy al-thÈnÊ (the second revelation), it proves that its crucial role in laying down the fundamental principles of Islamic jurisprudence cannot be over-emphasized. Nonetheless, the consideration given to its categorization into MutawÈtir (consecutive) and ÈÌÈd (solitary) for the purpose of applicability should not be over-looked. Jurists of past and present have divergent opinions regarding the applicability of Ìadith ÈÌÈd in Shari’a matters, thus leading to variations in jurisprudential verdicts. The Hanafi school being the first among the four Sunni schools of Islamic jurisprudence examines the solitary Hadith in more critical way. Others seem to be more lenient with respect to its applicability; perhaps due to the flow of Hadith and the subsequent development in its sciences in the latter’s ages. Here, we shall discuss the various views of jurists in relation to the applicability of ÌadÊth ÈÌÈd in Shari’a matters. The paper will consist of the introduction, the crucial role of Hadith in Sharia, its meaning and classification. Emphasis will be laid on the solitary Hadith through its meaning, juristic opinions on its applicability, their arguments, justifications, critical analysis of their arguments and the preponderant opinion.
