The aim of this paper is to review and evaluate the techniques of the teaching of English spelling, Moreover, this study attempted to focus on the spelling difficulties encountered by Libyan students. Sixty university students were asked to write essays and their spelling mistakes were collected and analyzed, The results indicated that the highest category of mistakes was omission of letters in addition to other types of errors. The results showed that the students LI interference and the lack of any technique of teaching English spelling are the main factors of the students’ problems. To overcome these problems, this paper suggested some pedagogical recommendations for teachers and course book designers.
