تهدف الدراسة إلى التعرف على الدور الذي يقوم به أخصائيو المعلومات في مكتبات جامعة الدمام بالمملكة العربية السعودية ومدى إلمامهم بالمهام الملقاة على عاتقهم، ومدى امتلاكهم أدوات وخصائص التحول نحو القيام بأدوار عمال المعرفة، وكذلك التعرف على أماكن النقص في المهارات والخصائص لدى أخصائي المعلومات واقتراح ما يمكن أن يعوض ذلك النقص. وقد اعتمدت الدراسة على استخدام المنهج الوصفي التحليلي بأسلوب دراسة الحالة الميدانية، وذلك للتعرف على دور وواجبات أخصائي المعلومات كعمال للمعرفة. وقد أظهرت الدراسة امتلاك أخصائي المعلومات العديد من المهارات والأدوات التي تمكنه من القيام بدور جوهري وواضح كعمال للمعرفة ومن تلك المهارات معرفة مفاهيم التخصص والوعى بمدلولاتها، متابعة ومجاراة جديد التخصص بصفة مستمرة، وامتلاك مهارات فنية خاصة بالتعامل مع المصادر الإلكترونية وغيرها، بالإضافة إلى الحرص على المشاركة في المؤتمرات والورش المهنية المتخصصة، ويواجه أخصائي المعلومات في مكتبات جامعة الدمام العديد من التحديات مثل تحدى اللغة الإنجليزية والمصطلحات المتخصصة، وكذلك قضية الوعى بدور أخصائي المعلومات كعمال للمعرفة، وأخيرا خرجت الدراسة بمجموعة من التوصيات والمقترحات منها ضرورة ردم هوة اللغة مع الطرف الآخر من خلال إشراك الأخصائيين في دورات اللغة الإنجليزية وورش بشكل مستمر، والعمل على نشر الوعى بين الأخصائيين بالدور المتوقع منهم كعمال للمعرفة من خلال تحميلهم المسئولية والتقييم المستمر لهم.
The study aims to identify the role played by information specialists in the libraries of Dammam University in Saudi Arabia and the extent to which they are entrusted with the tasks assigned to them, and the extent to which they possess the tools and characteristics of the shift towards the roles of knowledge workers, as well as to identify the shortage of skills and characteristics of the information specialist, to make up for that shortfall. The study relied on the use of the descriptive analytical method in a manner field case study to identify the role and duties of specialist information for knowledge workers. The study showed that the information specialist possesses many skills and tools that enable him to play a fundamental and clear role as knowledge workers. These skills include knowledge of the concepts of specialization and awareness of their meanings, follow-up and continuous new specialization on a continuous basis, possessing technical skills related to dealing with electronic resources and others, conferences and workshops in specialized professional, facing information specialists in the University of Dammam libraries with many challenges, such as the challenge of English terminology and specialized, as well as the issue of awareness of the role of specialist information for knowledge workers, and finally came out father Aceh set of recommendations and proposals, including the need to bridge the language with the other party through the involvement of specialists in English language courses and workshops on an ongoing basis, and to spread awareness among specialists role expected of them laborers knowledge through continuing to hold them responsibility and evaluation for them.
