المستخلص: تركز الدراسة على خدمات تحرير المنشورات العلمية التي تقدمها بعض المؤسسات التحريرية عبر شبكة الإنترنت، والتي ترمى إلى مساعدة الباحثين غير الناطقين بالإنجليزية على تحرير مسوداتهم البحثية قبل التقدم بنشرها إلى إحدى القنوات المستهدفة، إذ توجه الدراسة اهتمامها بشكل أساسي إلى خدمة الباحث العلمي العربي الذي يسعى إلى النشر الدولي بالدوريات المتخصصة في مجال المكتبات والمعلومات. وقع اختيار الباحث على عينة مقصودة من المؤسسات التحريرية، بلغ عددها 15 مؤسسة مختلفة. واستنادا إلى المنهج الميداني المقارن، كشف التحليل عن وجود فئتين من الخدمات التحريرية التي تقدمها تلك المؤسسات؛ وهما: الخدمات الأساسية، والخدمات الإضافية الداعمة. فيما يتعلق بالخدمات الأساسية، جاءت خدمة المراجعة اللغوية في المرتبة الأولى بنسبة 100 %، تلتها خدمة تنسيق المحتوى العلمي في المرتبة الثانية من حيث الأهمية بنسبة 86.7 %. وفيما يتعلق بالخدمات الإضافية الداعمة، جاء في مقدمتها خدمة تقديم شهادة التحرير والمراجعة بنسبة 73.3%، ثم خدمة التحكيم المبدئي بنسبة 53.3 %. وكشف البحث أيضا عن عدد من المعايير المعتبرة عند حساب تكاليف تقديم الخدمات التحريرية، منها ما يتعلق بلغة المقالة، ونوع الخدمة، ومستوى الخدمة، وغيرها. كما أوضح البحث أن هناك ضمانات معينة تتعلق بتقديم الخدمات التحريرية كصيغة اتفاق أو التزام بين المؤسسات التحريرية والمستفيدين من الخدمة.

In terms of scholarly communication and interna¬tional publishing, there are some challenges faced by authors who are not native English speakers during the process of submission manuscripts to be accepted and published specifically in Library & Information Science journals. Thus, the scholars and researchers of many countries which English is not the primary language use a variety of manu¬script preparation, translation of manuscripts into English, pre-submission peer review, correction and/or editing services before submission manu¬scripts to the targeted journals in order to get their papers ready for submission. This practice is en¬dorsed by many scientific institutions around the world and the scholarly journals may advise the second language authors to use these services. Also this practice is endorsed by some national universities in non-English speaking nations. One of the challenges that faced by authors is re¬lated to how can author present the results of his/ her research manuscript in appropriate style. The current study aims to discuss all types of the man¬uscript editing services that may help research¬ers to overcome the challenges of the submission process. Depending on the field methodology and content analysis approach using a check list, the study surveyed a sample of international editing in¬stitutions around the world (n=15 institutions). The sample institutions provide its manuscript editing services to researchers and scholars in several and important disciplines such as Social Sciences, Hu¬manities and Library & Information Science. The results reveal that the main editing services that available by the studied institutions are the follow¬ing: English language editing service (100%) that aims to improve the chances of having the paper accepted; Manuscript formatting service (86.7%) in order to save the valuable time of author formatting to a specific journal style by the skilled experts who check the manuscript according to the specified journal style; Figure preparation service (73.3%) that improves the visual presentation of the paper; and translation service (60%) from several foreign languages (n= 14 languages) into English. The re¬sults reveal that there are additional author support services; for example: Editing Certificate (73.3%), pre-peer review service (53.3%), journal selection and submission (46.7%), and training services (33.3%), etc. The study discussed the prices and guarantees of the sampled editing services gener¬ally. The field study explained that there are some factors or standards related to calculate the prices of each service such as the article language, the length of the paper and the level of the service. It is useful for the Arab researchers to use the editing services in order to improve their manuscripts be¬fore submitting it to the targeted journals. The study recommends researchers in library and information science field to ask scientific institutions that pro¬vide editing services especially both of Elsevier and Manuscriptedit; because it is essential if the author want the manuscript to make a good first impres¬sion on journal reviewers and general readers and also take attention that poor English is often one of the main reasons for rejection academic papers. The study recommends LIS researchers to conduct a field survey to understand better the challenges faced by Arab authors during the submission pro¬cess and to devise new strategies that may help to overcome those challenges.
