The paper focuses on two cognitive capacities, conceptual metaphor and conceptual integration proving their applicability to the literary criticism. It explains that the understanding of their conceptual function and underlying brain mechanism provides scholars with insight into how meaning and creativity are constructed in the literary works. Moreover, it argues that reading literature with conscious concentration on these cognitive capacities generates wider activation of brain circuits and develops the cognitive performance of the reader. Accordingly, it explores the intersection of literary criticism with cognitive science, contributing to a growing tendency of literary research based on cognitive theories.
