This is an analytical study of the digital collections available in the World Digital Library (WDL), those huge collections — both in quantity and quality— in various languages and from all countries of the world, which are available by the largest digital libraries available on the web, the World Digital Library. This study is aimed at analyzing the digital collections available in the World Digital Library to identify their quantitative and qualitative trends, strengths and distinctions, weaknesses, and shortcomings. A number of sub-objectives emerge from this main objective. These sub-objectives are related to knowledge of the qualitative, objective, linguistic, institutional, geographical, and temporal distributions of the digital materials available in the library in question.
In this study, the researcher used the bibliographic approach based on the total analysis of digital materials available in the World Digital Library in a quantitative analysis manner according to several distributions (qualitative, objective, linguistic, institutional, geographic, and temporal). He also analyzed the numerical trends of these digital materials to identify strengths and weaknesses within their coverage.
The study produced several important findings that answered the questions raised in the methodological introduction, perhaps most notably, that the World Digital Library provides a huge asset — both quantitatively and qualitatively— of digital collections and materials, shown by the various distributions contained in this study, that help it to support its role and achieve its main objectives. The qualitative distribution of this amount showed that prints, photographs, and newspapers accounted for nearly three-quarters of the total amount (70.80% of the total). The objective distribution showed that the predominant proportion is occupied by humanities and social sciences (92.22% of the total). Its linguistic distribution showed that twelve languages (representing only 9.09% of available languages) acquired the predominant proportion of digital materials available at the library (88.13% of total digital materials). These languages respectively are: Arabic, English, Spanish, French, Russian, Chinese, German, Latin, Japanese, Persian, Portuguese, and lastly, Italian. This means that Arabic dominates all the languages of the library's digital materials, which shows the World Digital Library's interest in making a large proportion of its digital materials available in Arabic.
