Most of the sciences connected with different literary genres, especially of poetry, resemble each other in their general attributes, whatever be the peculiarities they might bear in relation to the peoples who develop them or the traditions they follow. The sciences of prosody and rhetoric in Sanskrit, Greek and Arabic traditions have a close connection with each other despite their distinguishing features. Urdu is influenced in its rhetoric by Arabic directly as well as through Persian. This impact is not confined to borrowing a few rules and terms to be employed or applied in a certain manner. Instead, it goes beyond this limit to adopt all the terms and rules with every single detail developed in Arabic. Application of the rules, is of course, based on Urdu examples. This kind of influence is noticed only when some language is developed in its literary genres under the patronage of rulers who come as conquerors with a civilization different to that of the conquered ones. This has been the case with respect to Urdu poetry and related sciences in their formational phase. |
