This paper highlights the influence of Islam and the Arabic language on the evolution of Urdu and its development through the ages in the Indian Subcontinent. It is divided into five main sections. The first section briefly speaks about the Indian languages, their history and the influence of Arabic on these languages. It also explores the contribution of the Muslim civilization to the development of the social and cultural million of the Indian Subcontinent with the early Muslim conquest of India and the foundation of Islamic rule that lasted for centuries. The second section highlights the evolution of the Urdu language and literature under the patronage of Muslim rule through the ages. The third section studies the process of the rendering in Urdu of the Arabic words and phrases, providing many examples in this regard. The fourth section searches for the origin of some Urdu words coming from other languages through different means and becoming an integral part of it. The fifth section focuses on the influence of the Arabic Rhetoric on Urdu language and literary tradition. |
