This research aims to investigate the classroom discourse problems in only five Sudanese universities. The research is conducted mainly to investigate the students’ problems in understanding the lectures. The research main objectives are to know why the students fail to understand the lectures, how the environment affects the students’ learning and understanding, what methods the lecturers use can impact on the students’ understanding, and when lecturers intervene to check if the students understand or not. In order to identify the problems, four hypotheses were put under investigation. The researcher used the analytic descriptive methods to collect the data and used observation, questionnaires, interviews. The researcher chose 50 lecturers and 100 students as participants to provide information through the questionnaires and the interviews. The researcher attended some lectures and observed the classroom discourse, the teachers’ performance, the students’ roles, and classroom learning conditions. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed the data manually and through the SPSS computer program. By analyzing the data, the researcher came to the conclusion that all the hypotheses coincided with approval. The researcher concluded that the main problem stands on the students’ weak understanding, is their weak linguistic competence. Moreover, the students, the teachers, and the environment contribute to creating the problem. Finally, the researcher suggested some recommendations to overcome the problems such as using different proper methods of teaching and administrative strategies, developing the students’ linguistic knowledge, multiplying classrooms activities, promoting teachers’ performance through professional training development, developing academic curriculum, and adopting courses, which upgrade the students’ level.
