استولت الفنتازيا على جانب كبير من سرد بلاتونوف وفكره، فكانت أحد الوسائل الخطابية التي اعتمد عليها في رواية الأشباح، وحديثه في خضم إبداعه متشعب يتضمن الوهم والخرافة والسخرية، والرمز، والنقد، ويتخذ أشكالا شتى فمن واقع إلى خيال فنتازي مشبع بدلالات سيميائية، وبالرغم من حبه للحياة فحديثه مفعم بالألم الذي يحدق بشعب الجان فلولاه لم يكن البعد الفنتازي، وبدونه لا تتحق متعة الرواية. يستغل بلاتونوف هذا الجو ليورد لنا أنهارا من الألفاظ الغريبة الوهمية استطاع تسخير ذلك كله ليبدع عبر أنسجة خطابية فنتازية في إخراج صورة بعض المجتمعات الروسية التي قدمت المصالح المادية على حساب الروح الحساسة التي ارتبطت بالفقراء على مسار خط الرواية.
