يحاول هذا البحث الولوج إلى الطريقة التي اتبعها الشاعر أحمد مطر في تصوير الغرب في شعره، ذلك انه استطاع أن يعكس تجاربه الخصبة وأفكاره المتعددة في نتاجه الشعري، التي زودته بخبرة متميزة مكنته من التقاط آلية التصوير الشعري الأخاذ، ومما لا شك فيه أن نتاجه الشعري يعكس طبيعة العلاقة وتاريخها بين العرب والغرب. لذا فإننا في هذا البحث يمكن أن نتلمس هذه الصورة العميقة للغرب - وضمنها صورة الأنا - بأنها كانت ملفوفة بغلالة الشروط السوسيو ثقافية والسياسية للأنا الناظرة والمتلقية، وكانت محكومة بظرفية تاريخية كولونيالية، الأمر الذي أفرز صورة فسيفسائية تتداخل فيها صورة الرفض والقبول للغرب المتسلط بالقوة والدهاء بصورة التحسر والرثاء لواقع الأنا المتردية المغلوبة على أمرها. وقد استدعت طبيعة الدراسة التعرف أولا على طبيعة الملفوظ وشخصية اللافظ، وبالتالي الوقوف على ملابسات الملفوظية التي تلون صورة الغرب، وتحديد طبيعة العلاقة بين اللافظ والملفوظ من جهة، واللافظ والمنظور إليه من جهة أخرى، من دون أن نغفل بطبيعة الحال العلاقة الضمنية المتوافرة بين الملفوظ المدروس وبقية الملفوظات الموروثة أو النصوص الغائبة. فضلا عن تحديد الوحدات الثيمية المؤسسة لفضاء المغايرة مع الغرب ممثلة بـ (الهيمنة العسكرية والاقتصادية، العلاقة بين الغرب وإسرائيل، وصورة العملاء والخونة، والتقاطع الحضاري، والغرب بوصفه مصدر القبول) وأخيرا صورة الأنا مقابل الآخر. وعليه يمكن القول: إن الشاعر أحمد مطر استطاع أن يفيد من تجربته في المهجر، إذ ساعدته خبرته في التعاطي مع الغرب على تقديم رؤية عميقة ذات إيحاءات متباينة دلت على رموز معبرة، رغبة منه في أن يضمنها نظرته الذاتية للغرب، بوصفه رمزا للتسلط والهيمنة تارة، وموطنا للكرامة الإنسانية والرقي تارة أخرى. وبناء على ما تقدم نخلص إلى أن صورة الغرب في شعر أحمد مطر هي انعكاس طبيعي لمواقفه وأفكاره التي لها علاقة وثيقة بتجربته الشعورية التي عاشها في الغرب أو حتى في بلاده، وهي تلخص طبيعة العلاقة بين روحانية الشرق ومادية الغرب.
