|a يعد مرتضى مطهري أحد أهم المفكرين الإيرانيين الذين عنوا بتجديد الفكر الديني في إيران ولم يتوانوا عن نقد الانحرافات الفكرية التي سادت الفكر الشيعي وعلى رأسها مراسم عاشوراء وممارسات العزاء الحسيني التي اعتبرها مطهري عادات سيئة منشأها غير إسلامي ودائماً ما يؤكد مطهري على أن الهدف من إحياء ذكري عاشوراء هو جعل عاشوراء مدرسة تربوية ولابد لنا من العودة.

|b Mortaza Motahary is one of the most important Iranian thinkers who have expressed their interest in the renewal of religious thought in Iran. They did not hesitate to criticize the intellectual deviations that prevailed in Shiite thought, especially the Ashura ceremony and the Husseini consolation procession which Motahary viewed as bad habits that are of non-Islamic origin. He affirms that the purpose behind Ashura is to make it as a lesson that we must learn from and, therefore, we need to return to authentic historical sources to study Ashura from a purely Islamic point of view. Motahary faced many obstacles, but this did not stop him from moving forward.
