المستخلص: شكل الحوار الذي جمع بين "غادامير" و "هابرماس" مواجهة حقيقية بين نوعين من التأويلية، "تأويلية التراث" و "تأويلية نقد الأيديولوجيات". فإذا كان "غادامير" قد كشف، في مشروعه، عن عقلانية تواصلية قادرة على تجاوز حدود اللغة المعطاة، فقد شوه، برأي "هابرماس" مضمون اكتشافه، عندما اعتبر أن الفهم يتأثل على التراث أو الاتفاق المسبق بين جماعة ما، في حين من الممكن تجاوز هذا الاتفاق المسبق من طرف نقد للأيديولوجيات.

C’est a une veritable confrontation entre une herméneutique de la tradition et une critique des idéologies qua donné lieu le débat entre Gadamer et Habermas. Si Gadamer a découvert le potentiel d’une rationalité communicative, susceptible de dépasser les limites d’un langage donné, il aurait compromis la portée de sa découverte, selon Habermas, en soutenant que la compréhension se fondait sur la tradition ou l’accord préexistant qui porte une communauté donnée. Or il est possible de transcender cet accord préexistant par une critique des ideologies.

The dialogue between Gadamer and Habermas was a real confrontation between two types of interpretation, “the interpretation of heritage” and “the interpretation of the critique of ideologies.” If in his project, Gadamir revealed communicative rationality capable of exceeding the limits of the given language, he, in Habermas's opinion, distorted the content of his discovery. When he considered understanding to be influenced by heritage or prior agreement between a group, whereas such prior arrangement can be overtaken by criticism of ideologies.
