520 |b This study is an analysis of the vowel pronunciation errors made by EFL students of English language in one of the Iraqi universities (Baghdad University). It aims at identifying and analyzing the types of errors students make to determine the types of pronunciation difficulties they encounter in vowel pronunciation when reading passages. More specifically, it investigates the sources of unintelligibility, which lead to a failure in communication. The results of this study demonstrate that Iraqi learners of English unintentionally change the vowel pronunciation in the syllable and consequently in the words of English. Results also show that the major reason for intelligibility failure is the mother tongue influence and spelling pronunciation. It also seeks the pronunciation difficulties the students have when reading English. Because of the difficulties of pronunciation rules and the confusion or mispronouncing of English pronunciation sometimes brings about, the present study is primarily conducted to suggest solutions to pronunciation difficulties and to find out why most students make such mistakes in pronunciation. In order to overcome such difficulties, this research suggests a new approach for teaching and learning L2 vowel pronunciation system. In addition, the study reports that the students have the same problems and that they make identical errors in English pronunciation.
