This study treats the topic of the “number compound” in Arabic (a number plus a countable noun) in an applied study of the errors committed by non-native students of Arabic. Such errors are compared with those committed by native Arabic speakers with the aim of revealing the reasons for these errors, offering an explanation for their occurrence, and providing suitable solutions for them. To this end, the researcher examines the texts and explanations dealing with the number compound in Arabic grammar books, as well as the efforts of modem grammarians to define functional number mles which contribute to correct speech. In addition, he looks into the ramification and complexity of the mles governing the number compound and their effect on the errors made by users of Arabic, be they students or instructors. The researcher applies contrastive analysis to the errors under examination in order to reveal the effect of individuals’ native language in what is referred to as “transfer” and “interference”. This approach is also applied in examining the effect of colloquial Arabic on formal Arabic in this connection. As for those errors in which neither native language nor colloquial Arabic plays a role, the researcher relies on error analysis, which classifies errors into two types: (1) intra-language-system errors (based on ignorance of the relevant mle, faulty generalization, mistaken assumptions about the language, and mle ramification), and (2) extra-language system errors (based on the curriculum, teaching methods, motivation ,learning strategies and generalization). In addition, the researcher makes reference to certain language forms related to the number compound, such as ordinal numbers, fractions, Arabic words based on the fual pattern, and days of the week, all of which need to be included in curricula for teaching Arabic to non-native speakers. Finally, the researcher details conclusions and recommendations relating to teaching curricula and methods, and the need to focus on functional grammar in the teaching of Arabic to both native speakers and non-native speakers of the language.
