Prepositions need special attention with respect to their association with verbs, nouns, adjective and adverbs. They can pose problems and difficulties especially to language learners and translators altogether. Changing the meanings of phrasal verbs depends on the prepositions they associate with. In this paper, the Arabic preposition 'في' is focused on in particular. The meaning of prepositions can change and take the meaning of another preposition. This change in meaning is justified by the context that includes those prepositions. This is clear in the examples given in this paper. In addition, the comparison achieved through the English translations of the Arabic examples of the preposition in question gives a chance to see the changing of equivalent prepositions in both languages. We want to see whether the change, if any, is in form or content. Does such phenomenon exist in English? Can we have a zero representation of the preposition in question when translated into English? A brief discussion is given of the equivalent English preposition. Lastly, conclusions are drawn of the main aspects of this paper. |
