المستخلص: Transcription has attracted the attention of many linguists' years ago till the present, this may be due to the fact that transcription means pronunciation and there is no doubt any wrong pronunciation leads to misunderstanding of a speaker by a listener. This study is interested in investigating English transcription mistakes committed by Iraqi students. 100 undergraduate / second year students / English department / College of Basic Education / Mosul University have been chosen randomly. Data have been presented in giving the students two forms of sentences and require from them to transcribe the two sentences phonemically. Sentences are given in two forms, written form and oral form. In the light of the findings, it has been concluded that females in some extents are better in transcription than males. One of the main reasons of weakness in transcription in general is the ignorance of the English sound system by most of the students. Furthermore, most of the students depend on written form of English and ignore listening and speaking in English. The scarcity in using of academic dictionary by the students participates in committing mistakes in transcription. Finally, some recommendations have proposed in attempting to help learners of English learn the right transcription.
