This study examines how readers' schemata influence their interpretations of Dante's Inferno. By analyzing the interaction between cognitive frameworks and the text's themes, characters, and symbolic elements, the research uncovers nuanced interpretations. Using a mixed methods approach with a survey questionnaire and qualitative interviews, data was collected from five participants. The survey responses were cognitively analyzed, while the interviews underwent thematic analysis. The findings demonstrate diverse meanings and insights that arise when the participants apply their schematic knowledge to Dante's intricate narrative of the afterlife. The analysis emphasizes the deviations from the narrator's intended meaning, offering valuable insights into readers' cognitive processes and interpretations. Specifically, it explores the process called Schematic Knowledge Deviation, as those participants assimilate and accommodate new information, navigate complex symbolism and allegory, and engage with the moral and philosophical themes presented in the text.
