Learning a second language is rapidly becoming more popular and a widely recognised skill. The purpose of this research is to look into theories of second language learning and acquisition and a reflection of a journey to become bilingual. Through the exploration in the acquisition and second and foreign language theories, we find the different hypothesis that converge in its postulates and at the same time disagree with ideas and thoughts as far as the way and person acquires or learns the target language is concerned. Many researchers have developed explanations in order to argue the modern language learning (L1) as a useful tool in teaching foreign languages and its influence and relation in the second language acquisition (L2) (Hall, and Hewings, 2000). Some may argue that children learn the target language by imitation or repetition of utterances and they are able to creating individual meaning. Others believe that setting and environment play an important role in adolescents’ learning, since they are exposed to English information resources as music, magazines, movies, etc, besides, attend English courses in order to improve English skills and competences. In the case of adults, learning can be more ‘difficult’ or ’slow’, many of them travel to another country to get a job and they think that it is the chance to learn the foreign language; but the matter is that they face tiredness after work, and interaction with speakers of the same language in the place of work. Throughout writing this research, several important points have been included.as the research represents an attempt of investigation in Second Language Acquisition. The research consists of four chapters: The first chapter is an introduction which presents a distinction between second language learning and acquisition( SLL, SLA) and introducing English as global language. The second chapter deal with the literature review and the theoretical background of the study, behaviourism, cognitive theory, socio-cultural theory and second language learning. The third chapter presents the methodology that has been used in this research which is case study. and a brief history of learning English in Libya. The last chapter is the practical part of the research, it focuses on the two learners and the analysis of the most common errors, and will be finalised with a conclusion. Definitions of terms (according to this research) Learning: conscious process in which you gain some knowledge usually in regular classes. Acquisition: subconscious knowledge you get from the environment. First language ( L1 ) : mother tongue. Second language ( L2 ) : any language but not the official. Error: Regular mistake even though corrected before. Mistake: done once or twice but not anymore. |
