The study evaluates data from the Arabic novel "Alley of Al-Madaq" by Najib Mahfouz and their English translations by Trevor Le Gassick (1966) and Humphrey Davis (2011) .Four manuscripts have been highlighted as posing challenges for translators, with two types of allusions, namely Proper Nouns (PN) and Key Phrases (KP). The study aims at: (1) Identifying the translating strategies used by the translators in rendering the allusive expressions into Arabic and (2) pinpointing the most effective elements that influence the translators in rendering allusive expressions into English. It hypothesizes that: (1) The most frequent strategy of translating allusion in Najib Mahfouz's novel in question is the retenation of the name when the noun phrase form allusion is used and literal translation when key phrase form is used; and (2) Culture is the main factor that influences translators in their translation of allusive expressions in Najib Mahfouz's novel in question. The results of the study confirm that the most common strategy involved in the translation of allusions in Najib Mahfouz's novel is retaining the original name when the allusion is in noun phrase form , while the strategy of opting for literal translation appears in key phrases form, and that culture significantly impacts translators when dealing with allusive expressions in Najib Mahfouz's novel. It implies that the translators' cultural backgrounds along with those of the target audience shape their decisions in translating these expressions.
