يعد التوحد من الاضطرابات النمائية المعقدة التي تظهر في مرحلة مبكرة من عمر الطفل، وتستمر مدى الحياة، حيث يظهر معظم أطفال التوحد علامات تدل على ذلك الاضطراب في عمر (2) إلى (3) سنوات، وغالباً ما يصفهم آباؤهم بأنهم مختلفون عن الأطفال الآخرين، وأنهم انطوائيون ومنعزلون، ويظهرون اهتماماً قليلاً بالآخرين. وتهدف الدراسة الحالية إلى محاولة التعرف على الاتجاهات العالمية المعاصرة في تناول مفهوم التوحد، والخصائص العامة المميزة لأطفال التوحد، وتقييم وتشخيص التوحد، والبرامج التربوية والعلاجية الملائمة لأطفال التوحد والتي يمكن الاستفادة منها في دعم ورعاية أطفال التوحد، وخفض مشكلاتهم وتحسين مستواهم، سواء تم ذلك في المنزل أو في مؤسسات ومراكز التربية الخاصة، أو بالتعاون بين الأسرة والقائمين على رعاية الطفل التوحدي في المؤسسات المعنية. وقد تناول الباحثان في الدراسة مفهوم التوحد والتطور التاريخي له، وخصائص الطفل التوحدي متمثلة في الخصائص: الاجتماعية، اللغوية، الحركية، المعرفية، الاهتمامات والأنشطة. والتحدث عن أساليب وأدوات التشخيص المتنوعة للتعرف على الطفل التوحدي، وعرض لأهم البرامج التربوية، العلاج الطبي، برامج التواصل الإثرائي والبديل، برامج التدخل المبنية على الاتجاه الفسيولوجي، وبرامج تحسين المهارات الاجتماعية. وأخيراً قدمت الدراسة مجموعة من التوصيات التربوية لمؤسسات ومراكز التربية الخاصة المعنية بالتوحد وأولياء الأمور، بهدف الاستفادة منها في دعم ورعاية أطفالهم \

The researchers in the study dealt with the concept of autism and its historical develop! nent, characteristics of autistic children represented in the characteristics: social, linguistic, motor, cognitive, interests and activities, methods and various diagnostic tools to identify autistic child, and the most important educational programs, medical treat¬ment, Communication alternative programs, intervention programs based on the Physiologically Oriented (Inter¬ventions), and programs to improve social skills.
