Many foreign students start to learn Arabic for different purposes and through a variety of programs in several Arab countries such as Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Yemen... However, those students fail, in many cases, to achieve full cultural integration, or invest the acquisition they receive inside the Arab centers into communicative situations they might encounter outside those centers. In fact, we tend to question the degree of interaction between the linguistic and cultural levels in the students’ performances both linguistically and culturally. This fulfillment comes up not only to the students’ expectations, but also to the expectations of their institutions whether in the Arab world or those institutions that pledge their learning in their original countries. Moreover, this situation becomes increasingly problematic as it raises complex questions, such as: - What is the role that linguistic environment in Morocco plays in inhibiting the cultural integration of foreign students in terms of linguistic duality and plurality, as well as throughout their learning progress in reading and writing classical Arabic? - Why do non-natives speakers share one common desire to learn Arabic? - What do we teach them, classical or vernacular Arabic? - How do we help them to culturally integrate in light of the gap between the multiple usage of classical Arabic and the colloquial usage? - Are a few cultural visits, co-living with families, and visiting popular weekly markets enough to achieve cultural integration? Likewise, we have chosen Alakhawayn University as a case study for the above mentioned hypotheses. In other words, why do Alakhawayn University’ students achieve excellent linguistic performance at the expense of a weak cultural integration, while students of ordinary centers and institutes manage to attain excellent linguistic performance and successful cultural integration as well?
