|b This study examines the strategies of translating English idioms into Arabic in three of the most widely used general English- Arabic dictionaries. Following a review of relevant literature, the researcher attempts an operational definition of idioms on the basis of which a hundred idioms have been culled from various English- Arabic translation studies on idioms. Out of these, a selection of fifty English idioms have then been made by a panel of three professors of linguistics and translation with an enormous experience in English- Arabic lexicography. The study reveals that of the five strategies of translating idioms employed in those dictionaries, paraphrase is the most dominant one accounting for 73-87% of the Arabic renditions of such idioms. The second commonest strategy is "using equivalent Arabic idioms that are dissimilar in words and structure to their English counterparts", followed by "calquing". The adequacy of the translation strategies employed in rendering those idioms and the extent of appropriateness of the proposed Arabic renditions as well as their usefulness to the translator are then discussed. The researcher concludes by highlighting the implications of the study to translators and making some recommendations aimed at a more adequate handling of English idioms in English- Arabic dictionaries.
