تعد اللغة من اهم وسائل التواصل والتفاعل الإنساني، إذ يستطيع المرء بواسطتها التعبير عن نفسه ورغباته وافكاره، والتخاطب مع الاخرين .كما انها وسيلة من وسائل التواصل الفكري والحضاري بين الشعوب. وتعد القراءة إحدى المهارات الأساسية في اللغة الإنجليزية، إذ تكتسب القراءة أهميتها من أهمية اللغة ذاتها، فالإنجليزية أكثر لغات العالم أهميه في التواصل الدولي على نحو مسلم به. وقد وصف بعضهم القراءة بأنها قد أصبحت أقل أهمية في العصر الحالي بسبب توافر التواصل اللفظي والبصرى .لكن التطورات الجديدة لتقنية الطباعة والتواصل عن بعد مهدت الطريق لانتشار المواد المقروءة على نطاق العالم بأسره .ومما تجدر الإشارة إليه أن هذه التطورات الجديدة تفترض وجود جمهور مثقف .وهكذا حافظت مهارات تفسير المعلومات المعروضة في المواد المطبوعة على أهميتها مما جعل القراءة تحتل دورا أساسيا في التواصل العالمي.( White,1982:87). وتعرف القراءة بأنها المهارة اللغوية التي تمكن صاحبها من فهم المادة المكتوبة، فهي نشاط بصري مرتبط بالعمليات المعرفية، فهي ليست عملية الية بحتة (في حدود معرفة الحروف و الكلمات والنطق بها )،بل عملية معقدة، فهي تستوجب من القارئ الاستيعاب، والربط والاستنتاج والتفاعل مع المقروء (Burns, 1999, 181-185). وتهدف هذه الورقة البحثية إلى إلقاء الضوء على عدة نقاط تتعلق بالقراءة وهي: - تطور مفهوم القراءة في اللغة الانجليزية - النظريات التقليدية و الحديثة للقراءة - فعالية القراءة - طبيعة عملية القراءة - أنواع القراءة(مفهومها، مزاياها، عيوبها). \
English is considered as one of the important languages in the world,; it is a means of communication among nations and a means of acquiring knowledge of various types and all that has been achieved by human race in all fields of life. The literature on teaching English as a foreign language (FL) states that learning a FL is based on four basic skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing (Broughton et al, 1980). And reading is one of the basic skills in English and despite of the developments in the field of technology including radio, television, computer, etc. reading still is the basic pillar for getting knowledge. The importance of reading is also made clear by Allah in the Holy Koran in the Chapter 'Al- Alaq' 1-4, "Read in the name of the God" Thus the word ’read' was the first word to be revealed in the Holly Book and this illustrates the importance of reading in the life of the people and their development and civilization.. Reading aims at making the pupils reach the meaning of the text by choosing language cues from the text and avoiding the reading of each and every word. Reading is a language skill which enables the reader to understand the written word; it is a visual/ cognitive process related to knowledge. It is not a mere mechanical process(knowledge of letters, words and their pronunciation) but a complex process requiring comprehension, cohesion, conclusion and interaction with the text (Bums, 1999,: 181-1850). This paper aims at highlighting certain issues relating to reading: the concept of reading in English and its development, the traditional and the modem theories, the process, the types of reading and their strengths and weaknesses. \
