المستخلص: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting English major students ’ (EMSs) reluctance to generate questions. The sample consisted of volunteer junior (N=18) and senior (N =24) students at the Faculty of Education in Ismailia, Suez Canal University. An opinionnaire of six parts was constructed for the study and applied to two subject areas: Essay and Translation. Findings indicated that (a) there were causal relations between students predispositions towards generating questions and their background about questioning, (b) there were correlations between reasons behind EMSs generating questions and their reluctance in general and their reluctance to generate questions in particular and (c) cognitive and social factors — rather than psychological ones — were behind EMSs reluctance to generate questions. Those results were discussed and suggestions for further research were presented.
